Satire News Sites & Are Harmful

In today’s world, fake news sites are everywhere like a plague of locust invading social media networks. Making their money on nothing but click-baiting with outlandish claims. Everything from light-hearted humour to claims of natural disasters and hate crimes.

While most will not see the light hearted humour as harmful, it opens the doors for them to pose more serious articles which are still down right fake. Let’s, however not kid ourselves these sites are complete rubbish and rely on people on social media platforms to peddle their rubbish. Which in turn gets them more money by the share and the click.

Here is the massive problem with these satire sites. These articles tend to target minority groups, those on the fringes of society. Many of these groups currently are fighting for their equal rights. Fighting to be treated like humans, with dignity and respect. What do these satire sites do about these minority groups? They hit right where it hurts these groups, by inventing fabricated news stories that often jump to the worst possible outcome. They will use racist, homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic, and even degrading articles aimed at making fun of these minority groups.

Not to mention by sharing these articles it creates fear in these minority groups as they may be taking literal. It will also spread fear and can rally groups who oppose the spread of equality by thinking these groups are forcing and or asking people to be PC about their causes. Equality and human rights movements have been turned into victim blaming by those who oppose equality by claim it’s taking away their rights as a normal member of society. This is exactly why satire news sites are harmful. They tell people that the suffering of minority groups is fun and laughable. What is worse the slum lords at the top of these sites care about only money and not the lives they effect and cause trauma too. Protected by the rights of freedom of speech, but we need to ask ourselves when does freedom of speech become harmful, hateful, and verbally abusive?

Just today, an article was posted by satiratribune.com claiming that a Transgender Woman Killed Exiting A Georgia Woman’s Bathroom. Ok, we understand satire is in the name of your website. But you have to be kidding me; LGBT individuals fear this specific fictitious event in their everyday lives.

Why? Because events like this have happened in reality!

Making fun and poking at these events are just downright wrong. It’s disheartening, it’s defeating, it’s not helping anyone. However, like stated before freedom of speech protects these writers from legal action. How can we help fight against these websites? We can start by checking sources and reading news articles when we see them. Do not just read a title because its big and bold and hit share and post distraught comments about how bad it is. That is what they want, they want the fear of the share, let’s not give them that satisfaction!

So, if you want to share something, share this article
