We should all take a moment to stop and think about the problems illustrated in this image and others like it. Some might jump to the conclusion “Because they do porn?”. No, that is not even remotely the issue illustrated in this image. The issue has to do with the gender binary, or what people perceive as the ideal male and female.
When you first see images like this one you might think “OMG, Yes this is right!”. I know I have done it in the past, and I have been guilty, I have shared images similar to this one in the past. It was completely wrong to do so and here is why.
1.) Not Everyone Follows The Binary
Gender non-conforming people exist too! I can’t think of one that shows anything but the gender binary of what the world considers male and female. Which is a big problem and its a problem within the transgender community also. While it could be taken as the positive focus that says “You’re bathroom laws are dumb.” It also says “If you don’t look like this you don’t belong.” Which is horrible. The spectrum of the transgender community is more than just the binary. So when your sharing posts or even making images yourself stop and think about it. How will this be seen by people who are gender non-conforming, queer, bigender, or gender fluid, I could go on and on about how much this isolates people. It just says hey you don’t exist and were going to sweep you under the rug. We, just have to be better than this as a community and make sure we are representing everyone as a whole.
2.) Not Everyone Gets Passing Privileges
Let’s also not discount people who do not get passing privileges. This problem also ties in with gender non-conforming in the fact that much of the world does not see you as your true gender. This could be a combination of factors, transitioning later in life. Regardless, of the factors involved the same problem remains. Much of the world and even within our community. There is the perpetual stigma that says if you don’t pass you don’t matter. That thought process needs to stop.
What I hope everyone can take from this is be mindful and remember our community is diverse. Let’s not forget the statistics against gender non-conforming people and people of color within our community. You might fall within the gender binary or what the world considers male or female, or you might not. Regardless of where you stand on your gender identification try to remember what imagery can do, who it can hurt and who it might just down right singled out.Tweet #TransHopeUnited
